CODING..CODING.. CODING

I started this project as a volunteer on a Community Advocasy Board recruiting participants for Focus groups. After some major rallying I was able to meet the minimum participant number and went on to assist the facilitator and take notes during focus group.

As deadlines were quickly approaching I jumped in as an Interview Facilitator conducting interviews.

Again with the knowledge I had already had being part of the Focus groups and a few interviews it made sense that I would be delegated the task of transcribing the audio files.

That being a daunting task, the load had to be shared and my partners at GCN rallied together along with a bunch of extra help from Cal State Fullerton and their people to get the job done.

Now that transcriptions are about complete we move on to coding. One of our first tasks was for the community to code what they’ve learned from our interviews and focus groups and for our research partners at Cal State Fullerton to code what they’ve learned. We were to compare our initial three files together to obtain a minimum of 70% Inter Rater Reliability. After learning from our TCSC friends and their struggles, Cal State Fullerton (Ruth) and I being a part of GCN were able to successfully match after only two tries.

So now that we have passed what I saw as the hardest stuff we still are deep in the trenches of coding. Finding the right theme, identifying the “common” themes that come up. At this point I am wrestling with if it’s a “common” theme or if its one individual’s aspect of the situation. I will not be able to know more until I review more files but its hard to focus on the big picture when the piece of the puzzle you have is only a part of the sky.

This process thus far has been completely interesting, extremely stimulating, and I’ve learned a lot. I’d say the funniest thing I’ve learned is the way people talk, you don’t realize people’s pattern of speech until you are asked to transcribe a focus group of ten people that talked for about an hour.

Lots more to learn, and lots of coding to get back to.
